The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) strongly condemns the vice-chancellor’s nefarious move to convene a “Special and Emergent” (contradiction in terms) meeting of the Academic Council today to bring about sweeping changes in the name of academic reforms. As a matter of settled rule, only one item can be discussed in an emergent meeting. But the VC is abusing this emergent Academic Council meeting to get approvals for Meta University and Meta College, new courses like B. Tech in Humanities and Master’s in Mathematics Education, to amend Ordinance X-D and bring in Credit Transfer System (even as there is no approved Credit System in the University) and pass a slew of plagiarized, poorly designed and sub-standard syllabi. All this is being done in gross violation of the University Act, Statutes and Ordinances.

No discussion on these major academic matters has ever taken place at the levels of statutory Courses Committees, Faculties or the relevant Departments. And yet the over-riding changes are being pushed down the throats of the teachers who are the major stakeholders and who are very seriously concerned about the academic health and maintenance of academic standards.

The DUTA refuses to take all these shady activities lying down and warns the University authorities not to hold the rule of law to ransom. This brazen attitude of convening the AC meeting on July 21, getting the decisions ratified by the EC on July 22 and implement the Meta University and Meta college courses from July 23 (the opening day of the new academic session) is unacceptable to the teaching community. This tearing hurry with which the VC wants to be seen kow-towing to the malicious designs of his political masters both within and outside the country, smacks of the basest opportunism for personal gain. To cap it all, the VC refuses to enter into healthy dialogue with the DUTA for an amicable and meaningful resolution of the long-pending matters that continue to adversely affect the teachers of this University. If this situation persists, the DUTA would be left with no alternative but to take resort to stringent action, the responsibility whereof shall lie squarely with the University authorities.

The DUTA appeals to all teachers of the University to voice their collective resistance and stand united against this shameless attack on their democratic rights and service conditions.
