Press Release, 27 March 2014

The DUTA congratulates teachers and students who participated with great enthusiasm in the Freedom  Concert (Jashn-e-Azadi) today at the Kirori Mal College Hostel Gate.  Sushmit Sen Chronicles, the main artistes of the programme, enthralled the audience with their high-octane fusion music while folk singer Ratan Gambhir struck a chord with the audience with his powerful political message against the commercialization of education. The artistes expressed their solidarity with the ongoing struggle of the students and teachers of Delhi University.

Members of various students’ organizations raised slogans highlighting the demand for the rollback of FYUP and the removal of the autocratic Vice-Chancellor for imposing the draconian code of conduct on teachers which is clearly meant for suppressing dissent against the FYUP.

The second term for the VC was also opposed. Other demands of teachers like the immediate filling of vacant posts with the correct reservation roster and selection committees, and without the arbitrary screening points were also raised. The cultural protest was intended to emphatically assert the rights of students and teachers to academic freedom, to an environment conducive to a fearless exchange of ideas, without which the very idea of a University is undermined.
