PRESS RELEASE: 19 June 2014

Halla Bol and Chakka Jam by Students
and Teachers

The DUTA along with several student organisations – AIDSO, AISA,
AISF, CYSS, DSU, INSO, KYS, NEFIS, PACHHAS, SFI and SYS – gathered in
large numbers at the Arts Faculty Gate to protest against the DU administration,
demanding the immediate roll back of the illegal FYUP and the VC’s resignation
for having jeopardized the careers of thousands of students.

The protest was
historic as it brought together students and teachers on a common platform
shedding political differences and raising a united voice against the
Vice-Chancellor for committing such serious violations of national policies and
acting as if Delhi University were a state unto itself.

Braving extreme heat, the angry protesters held a meeting at
the Arts Faculty which was addressed by leaders of all the participating organisations
and then proceeded in a March to the Ramjas College Chowk. Protesters made a
human chain around the chowk bringing traffic to a standstill, as loud slogans of
“FYUP Roll Back! DU VC Go Back!” rent the air.

The protesters also demanded the cancelling of the Academic
Council meeting called by the VC for 21 June as the agenda includes more
courses under the FYUP, which has already been declared illegal by the UGC for
being in violation of the National Policy of 10+2+3. Speakers also urged the
Minister of HRD, Ms. Smriti Irani, for speedy intervention before the admission
process begins so that the future of yet another batch of students is not endangered.
