DUTA Press Release 9 August 2014

The DUTA takes strong exception to the bypassing of Prof. Nirmalangshu Mukherjee for the position of the Head of the Department of Philosophy. This is yet another example of the vindictive attitude of the administration towards those who expressed opinions not to the liking of the VC and his team.

Please find below the letter written by Prof. Mukherjee to the Vice-Chancellor.

The DUTA demands immediate reversal of the decision and appointment of Prof. Mukherjee as Head in accordance with the principle of rotation as laid down in the ordinances.

NANDITA NARAIN
President, DUTA
ANITA GHOSH
Joint Secretary, DUTA

Prof. Dinesh Singh
Vice Chancellor
University of Delhi
Delhi-110007

Sir,

I am a Professor of Philosophy since July 1998. I am informed that my esteemed colleague Prof. H. S. Prasad has been appointed Head of Philosophy Department. I have nothing against my colleague.

However, by the time-tested principle of rotation of headship between professors followed in the University, it was my turn to become the head. I wish to know the grounds on which the said principle has been denied to me.

In particular, I wish to know whether the denial is the consequence of the mala fide enquiry supposed to be constituted by the University against me. As I have written repeatedly to the relevant authorities in the University, the said enquiry was proposed in a memorandum of 13 January, 2014 on the basis exclusively of vindictive and false accusations reported by Ashok Vohra, the previous head. After my detailed rebuttal, the University has maintained deafening silence for seven months. Unless it is satisfactorily explained, the conclusion is unimpeachable that the false enquiry was constituted solely for the purpose of denying headship to me.

It is well-known that I am a strong critic in public of your mala fide, authoritarian, vindictive, and academically dubious administration, which has been fully exposed in the White Paper released by Delhi University Teacher’s Association. It is difficult to dispel the impression that you can go the extent of penalising a senior and most eminent professor of your university for protesting against your injudicious actions.

With warm regards,

Sincerely,

Nirmalangshu Mukherji
