Press Release: 17 December 2014

DU needs good governance rather than Good Governance Days

While DUTA acknowledges the need for good governance, especially in the context of Delhi University, the instructions from the MHRD regarding the observance of “Good Governance Day” with a seminar on the topic of “Use of Technology and Innovations in promoting Good Governance” on or before 25th December would be rendered ineffective if the government does not take action on the charges of financial and administrative irregularities levelled against the present Vice Chancellor. This VC is responsible for the academic erosion, administrative breakdown and assault on the democratic spaces of dialogue within the University.

In fact, it is shocking that the Visitor of the University has not responded to the innumerable representations made by the university community about the glaring violations as pointed out in the DUTA’s White Paper. Moreover, the Government is yet to act on the Satyam Committee Report on the diversion of over a 100 crores from the OBC funds for the purchase of laptops for the first year students under FYUP. It is the need of the hour that the government shows its real intent in eradicating corruption from the University.

Mere tokenism in the form of this hurriedly arranged seminar and the oratory competition would also not reap desired results because most outstation students, comprising a large section in the university, have already left for their home towns.

It has also been reported in a couple of newspapers that the Prime Minister will himself flag off the 5th Gyanodaya Express on the 18th December. If true, it will be an unfortunate validation and a stamp of approval for the misgovernance by the VC, who is guilty of violating the statutory processes in the university as well as of the Constitutional provisions of Reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PWD. The Gyanodaya project itself, as shown in the White Paper, is embroiled in financial scam and does not have the approval of relevant statutory bodies within the University.

The DUTA appeals to the Prime Minister to send out a strong signal against corruption by refusing any such invitations from this tainted VC and his team.
