DUTA slams the VC for arbitrary termination of services of two teachers of Hindu College

The DUTA condemns in strongest terms the manner in which services of two teachers of Hindu College have been terminated. The termination notice was issued by the Chairman, Governing Body on 21 February 2015 after the Vice Chancellor gave his sanction to the Governing Body’s decision on the matter taken in its meeting held in December 2014. It is important to note that out of 11 members present in the GB five members dissented against the proposal to terminate the service of the two teachers.

From the very start the College Governing Body and Delhi University administration have acted in an arbitrary and vindictive manner on the issue. Following a small tussle in a meeting of the Staff Association of the College, the two teachers had been put under suspension since 11 October 2013 on the basis of a complaint received against them. It should be noted that the teachers had been suspended even before the deadline given to them to file their replies to the show-cause notice was over. The suspension was continued against the rules and even an RTI query on the matter received a reply that the documents were not available with the college! These include the letter of Governing Body to the Vice-Chancellor seeking his approval for suspension, the letter of approval of the Vice-Chancellor as well as the further proceedings of the Governing Body.

It is unfortunate to see that no attempts were made by the Governing Body to resolve issues amicably, an effort which was must for the wellbeing of the college. Rather the arbitrary functioning of the Mr. Punj, Chairman, Hindu College demonstrated that he was unmindful of and insensitive to the erosion of the academic culture of the college by his actions.

By giving sanction to the Governing Body’s decision, the Vice Chancellor has once again shown that the good of Delhi University is not his focus. It is unfortunate that he has not questioned GB’s decision on violations of procedures and for a misappropriate quantum of punishment. By doing so the VC has allowed Governing Body to play with the career of these teachers and academic environment of the College.

The DUTA expresses its solidarity with these teachers and assures its support to them in their fight for justice. It views this as an assault on the entire community. It is a vindictive action aimed at silencing teachers and karamcharis. This only strengthens DUTA’s resolve to fight against misgovernance by the DU administration. DUTA has decided to hold an emergency Executive meeting on 25.02.2015 to discuss the issue and decide the course of action on the issue.
