DUTA Press Release on the vindictive action by the Vice-Chancellor against DUTA President
15 October 2015
In a shocking and condemnable move, the University Administration has set up a Fact Finding Committee against Ms. Nandita Narain, DUTA President to “examine” the complaints received more than a year back from three colleges (in August and October 2014) and has asked Ms. Narain to “present herself” before the Committee on Monday, 19 October. This is nothing but an attack against the teachers and their collective Body (the DUTA) for taking up grievances of teachers in these colleges as well as for pointing out grave illegalities, administrative collapse and abuse of office during the tenure of the present Vice-Chancellor.
That the Vice-Chancellor, at the end of his tenure, has chosen to act on complaints that date back to more than a year smacks of absolute vindictiveness against those who have raised their voice against his misdeeds. His attempt to teach a lesson to the DUTA and its President, which has articulated teachers’ grievances and issues related to academic and administrative misgovernance in the university, is nothing but a way to seek to draw attention away from the charges that he himself is facing. That he chooses to do so just before his term in office is coming to an end shows vindictiveness.
The university community will not tolerate this assault and calls upon the VC to desist from such acts in the interests of the democratic ethos which is the essence of what a university stands for. The DUTA is holding an Emergent meeting of its Executive on 16 October 2015 at 3 p.m. to discuss the course of action in the wake of this shameful act that constitutes an assault against every teacher of this university. The DUTA also appeals to all teachers to come for the meeting in large numbers to rebuff this draconian attack against its body.
