DUTA Press Release, 16.1.2017

The DUTA condemns the illegal decision of the Scrutiny Committee of the Delhi University to invalidate the nomination of ad hoc teachers as candidates for elections to the Executive Council and Academic Council of the University.

The decision violates Statute 5 of the Delhi University Act. Despite the inclusion of ad-hoc teachers in the electoral roll and their unambiguous voting rights, the Scrutiny Committee has arbitrarily decided that teachers working on ad-hoc basis are not entitled to contest the elections to the university’s statutory bodies.

While all candidates present at the scrutiny unanimously protested against the Scrutiny Committee’s arbitrariness and appealed to it to undo the decision, the Committee maintained that ad hoc teachers may not be considered eligible to contest elections despite having the right to vote. The Committee could not produce a single argument or reference to any Statute in justification of their position.

It is ironical that even after getting rapped on its knuckles by the High Court for long denying ad hoc teachers their right to get regularised, the DU Administration continues to maintain a hostile attitude towards ad hoc faculty who are appointed in the scale of Asst. Professors against full workload.

The DUTA warns the DU Administration to desist from perpetrating illegalities and jeopardizing the democratic process of elections in the University. It urges the VC to use his better judgement and reverse the decision of the Scrutiny Committee.
