                        DUTA PRESS RELEASE: 16 October 2017

Stand off between Delhi University and Delhi Government over formation of Governing Bodies of 28 colleges  lead to stopping of salaries;

DUTA meets Sh Manish Sisodia and urge for an interim relief

The 28 Delhi University colleges aided or maintained by the Delhi Government await formation of Governing Bodies for over a year. The matter was brought as an agenda item in the Executive Council meetings of July 2017 (3 July, continued on 14 -15 July 2017). The EC decided to constitute a Committee to rework the list, causing further delay. In response to this, the Delhi Government announced a freeze in July on the grant to these Colleges as a penalty.

Because of the stoppage of grants, the colleges are now finding it difficult to release salaries to teaching and non-teaching staff.

The DUTA President and Office Bearers met Dy. CM of the Government of Delhi and NCT, Sh. Manish Sisodia today. This meeting was sought on urgent basis given the crisis for the employees of these colleges.

The Dy. CM informed the DUTA that the decision to freeze funds had been taken as a result of the inordinate delay, on the part of the University, to cooperate in the formation of governing bodies in these colleges.

The DUTA delegation expressed the concern that teachers and non-teaching staff in these colleges would have to go without salaries leading to crisis in their personal lives and for their families. The DUTA delegation requested the Dy. CM to ensure that employees and students are not made to suffer due to this standoff between the State Government and the University. The DUTA has  demanded interim relief for the funds required to pay salaries.

The DUTA delegation also discussed the issue of corruption and misuse of Office by the Principal, Bhagini Nivedita College and requested that the Minister takes personal interest in restoring academic environment of the institution. The DUTA delegation also discussed crisis faced by colleges, including Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College, because of inadequate teaching posts.

The meeting was congenial. The DUTA hopes that the Delhi Government will release salaries as interim relief.
