DUTA GBM decides unanimously to continue Strike till 8 March

The DUTA General Body met today and decided unanimously to continue the Strike till next Friday, 8 March to press for its demand for the restoration of the 200 point roster taking the University/ College as a unit. In the light of the rejection of the MHRD’s Review Petition by the Supreme Court on 27 February, the teachers of Delhi University had hoped that the Government would keep its promise made on the floor of Parliament to bring an Ordinance for the same. As teachers waited expectantly for the outcome of the Cabinet meeting yesterday, their hopes were once again belied as the Government failed to deliver on the promise. It is with a deep sense of disappointment and anguish that teachers have been forced with no option but to continue the Strike for yet another week. The matter has an immediate urgency as any change in the reservation roster will lead to loss of jobs for SC/ ST/ OBC teachers and massive displacement of ad-hoc teachers currently working in Delhi University and its Colleges.

The DUTA has also been demanding a One-time Regulation for the absorption of ad-hoc and temporary teachers in Delhi University to safeguard the career and livelihood of the more than 4000 teachers who have served for long years under extremely exploitative and vulnerable conditions. The DUTA has also been demanding that the MHRD instructs the VC to withdraw the SLPs against Pension to Cat I and II.

Delhi University is facing a serious crisis as a host of issues remain unresolved for long years at the University level and the inaction of the VC has caused an administrative paralysis in the University. Issues such as long overdue promotions, counting of past service, the illegal recovery from teachers for benefits given in the past, release of pension to option cases, release of revised pensions and allowances are festering due an indifferent administration. Similarly, the unresponsiveness of the administration to the demand for the inclusion of Physical Education in the list of disciplines as well as the dropping of the Clause on Contractulaisation in the Draft Ordinances is a cause for anguish for teachers.

The DUTA has pledged its support for the Call for Bharat Bandh on 5 March to mark a year since the 5th March letter striking down the 200 point reservation roster taking University/ College as unit and against the mass scale eviction of tribals and forest dwelling families from their traditional areas of inhabitation. The DUTA GBM has decided to March from Mandi House to Parliament Street to press for the demand for an Ordinance.

On 6th March, there will be college-wise dharnas and the teachers will interact with students. The DUTA GBM has also appealed to students to support their teachers and assures them that teachers will compensate for the loss of teaching due to the ongoing agitation.

The DUTA GBM resolved to appeal to teachers to join the Pratirodh March tomorrow (2 March at 11 am from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar) to protest the eviction of more than a crore Adivasis and forest dwellers who will be rendered homeless as a consequence of the Supreme Court order.

The DUTA GBM will meet again on Friday, 8 March to review and discuss future course of action.
