Teachers and Students play Street Cricket to trash Fraudulent FYUP Tamasha
Braving intermittent spells of rain, an enthusiastic crowd of students and teachers assembled under the banner of the DUTA to play a cricket match at the Arts Faculty Gate in protest against Antardhvani and the administration’s misuse of the University Sports stadium.
The DUTA had decided to boycott Antardhvani because the DU administration is using this cultural festival to spread false propaganda in support of the FYUP. By making it mandatory to participate in the Antardhvani the administration has shamelessly tried to browbeat students and teachers to give positive feedback in favour of the FYUP. While the last year’s Antardhvani was used to launch the FYUP, this year’s Antardhvani is being used to “showcase” the FYUP and the Foundation Courses. The students and teachers of this University have demanded a roll back of the FYUP based on the actual classroom experience.
Besides this, DUTA has also slammed the denial of sports facilities in the two University stadia that were renovated during the CWG 2010. Since its renovation, the main stadium in the University campus has been locked up and is only used to run the Cluster Innovation Center and other activities totally unrelated to sports. Crores from the Public Exchequer are thus being allowed to go waste. The University’s sportspersons have previously protested against this injustice but the university administration has turned a deaf ear to such protests. DU is possibly the only university in the world wherein its students and faculty are denied access to the University Sports Stadium.
Many students’ organisations including AISA, AIDSO, KYS, CYSS (Aam Aadmi Party Students Wing), SFI, DSU and PACHHAS joined the DUTA in its protest. The protest started with a demonstration against the VC and his pet-project (FYUP) and culminated with a cricket match between the teachers and students. Through the cricket match the gathering satirized the VC and his crony-officials.
To highlight its demands for a roll back of FYUP and corrective measures for the current batch of students as well its demand for filling of vacant posts, the DUTA has given a call for a March to the Parliament on Tuesday, 18 February, which will also be joined by students’ organisations.
