Throughout the day, hundreds of teachers thronged the venue of the Hunger Strike to express their solidarity with the DUTA. Office bearers of the DUTA and activists spoke out in unison against what they see as a ‘hostage situation’ prevailing in Delhi University, attributing the crisis to the Vice Chancellor’s deliberate attempts to overstep his brief and impose coercive modes of governance within the University. The DUTA expressed its determination to safeguard, at all costs, the democratic rights and dignity of the University community and prevent any further demoralization of teachers, students and karamcharis. While the Hunger Strike is expected to pick up in its intensity and fervor in the coming days, the DUTA has also sent out an appeal to the DUCKU to support its protest action. A candle-light vigil will accompany the Hunger Strike on Friday evening from 5 pm to 6 pm, wherein the candles will symbolize the 4000-odd young teachers who have been condemned to continue teaching in ad-hoc capacity and despite being eligible, are faced with little prospect of regularization in the near future, unless the appointment process is immediately kick-started. Similar action programmes and cultural protests will be held frequently to highlight each issue that the DUTA has been articulating over the past year.
Tomorrow teachers from other colleges like Kirori Mal College, SGTB Khalsa College, Sri Venkateswara College, Ram Lal Anand College (E) and Aurobindo Morning College are expected to take over from the present volunteers and carry on the Relay Hunger Strike.
