The Indefinite Relay Hunger Strike of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) got off to a flying start today, with 23 teachers from Ramjas College, Daulat Ram College, Delhi College of Arts and Commerce and Deen Dayal Upadhyay College sitting on Hunger strike alongside the DUTA President Amar Deo Sharma, DUTA Secretary S. D. Siddiqui, former President of the DUTA Aditya Narayan Misra and Academic Council members A.K. Bhagi and M.R. Chikkara. The uncertainty over the venue for the Hunger Strike loomed till the last minute, as the University Administration showed its predictable reticence and disregard for the teachers in not allowing the DUTA to put up its tent. The matter eventually was resolved in favour of the DUTA as the teacher-leaders firmly held their ground and threatened to start the Hunger Strike right outside the University gates, on the main road.

Throughout the day, hundreds of teachers thronged the venue of the Hunger Strike to express their solidarity with the DUTA. Office bearers of the DUTA and activists spoke out in unison against what they see as a ‘hostage situation’ prevailing in Delhi University, attributing the crisis to the Vice Chancellor’s deliberate attempts to overstep his brief and impose coercive modes of governance within the University. The DUTA expressed its determination to safeguard, at all costs, the democratic rights and dignity of the University community and prevent any further demoralization of teachers, students and karamcharis. While the Hunger Strike is expected to pick up in its intensity and fervor in the coming days, the DUTA has also sent out an appeal to the DUCKU to support its protest action. A candle-light vigil will accompany the Hunger Strike on Friday evening from 5 pm to 6 pm, wherein the candles will symbolize the 4000-odd young teachers who have been condemned to continue teaching in ad-hoc capacity and despite being eligible, are faced with little prospect of regularization in the near future, unless the appointment process is immediately kick-started. Similar action programmes and cultural protests will be held frequently to highlight each issue that the DUTA has been articulating over the past year.

Tomorrow teachers from other colleges like Kirori Mal College, SGTB Khalsa College, Sri Venkateswara College, Ram Lal Anand College (E) and Aurobindo Morning College are expected to take over from the present volunteers and carry on the Relay Hunger Strike.
