DUTA Press Release, 8 June 2018

The DUTA is a conscientious body of teachers and has always ensured that students’ interests are not harmed.  The incredible support that the DUTA has been receiving from the student community indicates that the students are well aware that the grave issues that are at stake affect the stability and quality of the teaching-learning process.

The DUTA was forced to take this harsh step because of attack on Reservation Policy through 5 March 2018 UGC Notification and because of fear that some of the DU colleges may be made Autonomous Colleges. It is because of the joint student teacher movement that the UGC had to drop the agenda of grant of Autonomous Status to St Stephen’s College and Hindu College. Similarly, it is because of the on-going movement that the Minister, HRD in the meeting with the DUTA on 5 June  has promised that status quo will be maintained on the Roster issue and has given assurance that the Government will fight for the Constitutional Rights.

The fact that teachers have stayed away from evaluation work shows that teachers are unhappy and demoralised as they have been denied appointments and promotions for the last 10 years. Teachers have been denied pension. The DU administration should cease taking a one-sided view of the matter. Instead of reminding teachers of their duties,  the DU administration should enter a genuine dialogue and take concrete visible steps and give assurance towards resolution of issues which can be resolved at the University level.

The DUTA will assuredly move ahead by keeping the mutual interests of teachers and students in
 mind. The DUTA will review the on-going movement in its forthcoming meeting scheduled for 13 June.
