PRESS RELEASE: 17 June 2014

A meeting of Office Bearers of the DUTA along with DUSU and several student organisations like the ABVP, AIDSO, AISA, INSO, KYS, PACHHAS, NEFIS and NSUI was held today to discuss the adamant stand taken by the Vice-Chancellor of the University despite the decision of the full commission of the UGC declaring the FYUP illegal as it is in violation of the National Policy of 10+2+3 and as approval for it was never sought from the Visitor. Students and teachers unequivocally condemned the Vice-Chancellor’s arrogance at calling an Academic Council meeting on 21st June to pass more courses under FYUP and his cavalier attitude to the future of thousands of students, whose degrees are in danger of derecognition. Further, the meeting also took a positive note of the directive by the UGC to DU to withdraw its affidavit, wherein the University claims the right not to be bound by DOPT rules, in the court case on incorrect determination of reservation roster for teaching positions.

Members present at the meeting demanded the immediate resignation of the Vice-Chancellor as he has no moral authority to continue in office after committing such serious violations of national policies and acting as if Delhi University were a state unto itself.

The student organisations and the DUTA expressed their resolve to continue and step up the agitation if the Vice-Chancellor does not immediately announce the roll back of the FYUP. It was decided to hold a joint mass protest action under the banner of DUTA and DUSU on Thursday, 19 June 2014 from 11 am onwards to draw attention to the manner in which Delhi University is being run like a fiefdom and the fact that the future of thousands of prospective students lies in jeopardy if the illegal FYUP is not rolled back immediately.

The DUTA has also written to the HRD Minister today pointing out that as per the reports about the UGC decision, the Vice Chancellor is guilty of violation of Sections 31(4), 31(5) and 32(4), 32(5) of the DU Act, and thus of usurping the powers of the Visitor (the Hon’ble President) and of Parliament. If this indeed is the case, then for this transgression alone, he must immediately be removed from the office of Vice Chancellor. The Visitor must exercise his power under Section 31(6) and annul the Ordinances relating to FYUP without any further delay.

Nandita Narain, President

Harish Khanna, Secretary
