                                                                                                June 10, 2014.
Letter in support of the democratic movement of the various sections of Delhi University against the continuation of the FYUP.
1.                  We the Coordination Committee of Associations of Teachers in Delhi (CCATD) express our support to the democratic movement of the various sections of Delhi University against the continuation of the FYUP.
2.                  We would like to assure all sections of society that our opposition to the FYUP is on academic grounds, namely, its inappropriateness as a viable academic programme.
3.                  Whether the undergraduate programme is of four or three years the teachers would teach the same amount since teaching is regulated by the UGC rules and the student teacher ratio. The teacher’s opposition is on academic grounds and not due to considerations of their work load.
4.                  The academic problem has arisen because students are forced to specialize in the schools and this is sought to be corrected under FYUP by giving a more general education which of necessity means teaching elementary stuff in an undergraduate programme. Thus, the problem is that what should have been done at the school level is sought to be done at the undergraduate level.
5.                  Further, there is an acute problem at the research stage where students take many more years to complete their degree than in the good universities of the world.
6.                  Thus, we believe that reform is required both at the level of school and graduate studies. Only then can the reform at the undergraduate level be carried out.
7.                  We believe that the cart has been put before the horse because there was hardly any discussion with the academic community and the functioning of the AC and the EC of the Delhi University was subverted. We strongly condemn this.
8.                  We also condemn the strong arm tactics adopted by those in authority to suppress/silence voices of dissent in Delhi University in the last few years.
9.                  We support the call of the various democratic sections of the Delhi University to revert to the earlier system while protecting the interest of those students who were admitted into the FYUP last year.
