Dyal Singh College Teachers Association (DSCTA) Press Release, 02.05.2018

The Dyal Singh College Teachers Association (DSCTA) wants to bring into public scrutiny, a most difficult crisis that one of the largest of constituent colleges faces today, Dyal Singh College faces the imminent prospect of bifurcation of its land and infrastructural resources as the evening college which exists on the same campus is sought to be converted into a morning college which will be functional simultaneously on the same campus with similar timings. Instead of the existing arrangement of optimum use of the existing infrastructure by having a morning and and evening shift, this imposition will wreak havoc in the name of day to day sharing of already scarce resources at the same time. All the stakeholders of the College – teachers, students and Karmacharis – have protested against this move which will completely destroy the teaching-learning environment in the college. However the authorities are not paying any attention. Rather in order to legitimize this illegal bifurcation, the College Governing Body(GB)  and its Chairman Shri Amitabh Sinha went ahead and renamed the Evening College as Vande Mataram College. By this blatant act of renaming they not only denigrated the glorious educational legacy of Sardar Dyal Singh, the founder of the College, but also wilfully violated the terms of the transfer deed which insist upon status-quo on the name of the institution. After the DSCTA brought the issue into the public domain, the Hon. HRD Minister Shri Prakash Javedekar gave an assurance in the Indian Parliament that the name of the college will not be changed. . Despite the assurance, Shri Amitabh Sinha and the Evening College authorities conducted the 2018 annual day of the college under the banner of Vande Mataram Dyal Singh College. This open challenge to assurances on the floor of the Parliament is symptomatic of the impunity given to the Chairman and the evening college authorities by the University administration and the Government of India. The mindless act of carving two morning colleges out of the existing land is not at all academically or administratively sound and the whole spectacle of using ‘Vande Mataram’ to cover up this questionable deed exposes the deep malice and faultlines at the core of the system that allowed this move in the first place. The new signage of Vande Mataram dyal singh college mocks at the rightful anger of people wanting to protect the legacy of Dyal Singh Majithia and dismisses the academic rationale against the cosmetic and hollow claim of a second morning college on the same premises. The DSCTA would request the MHRD, parliamentarians and university administration to fix the responsibilityfor this violative, disruptive, unethical move of holding the annual function under this non-existent name. The DSCTA registers its strong protest against such brazen actions of the College GB Chairman and demands his immediate removal.
