DUTA and People’ Representatives demand President of India to end crisis on Roster issue

The DUTA held a joint Press Conference along with leaders of a wide spectrum of political parties to highlight the adverse effect on Reservation for SC, ST, OBC in teaching posts in Universities and Colleges, through the UGC 5 March circular  based on an Allahabad High Court Order. The order, upheld by the Supreme Court, changes the unit of Reservation from the college/University to the department/subject as a result of which the number of reserved posts advertised in several central universities shrunk to almost nil. This order has also brought to a halt the process of permanent appointments that had started in Delhi University after many years and jeopardised the career prospects of more than four thousand ad hoc teachers, including the question of their renewal in July, summer salary etc. Teachers have been agitating on this issue with an evaluation boycott since 9th May. As a result of the protests, the Govt filed an SLP, but is yet to give concrete assurances on the renewal of our ad hoc colleagues and the restart of permanent appointments based on the old roster.

The Press Conference was addressed by the DUTA President, along with representatives of political parties including Sitaram Yechury(CPI(M)), Manoj Jha(RJD), Udit Raj(BJP), Sushmita Dev(Cong), Atishi Marlena(AAP), Amarjeet Kaur(CPI),Pran Sharma(SUCIC), G. Devarajan(Forward Bloc), Kavita Krishnan(CPI(ML)). They appealed to the President of India to intervene and resolve the crisis, so the the Constitutional rights of the marginalised sections are protected, Ad hoc teachers are reappointed on the basis of the old roster and permanent appointments resumed at the earliest.  The following  joint statement was released. In addition BJP, SP and JMM released separate statements in support.
