DU teachers on strike to protest non-payment of salaries by Delhi Government
The teachers of Delhi University are once again on the warpath with the Delhi Govt as grants to the 12 colleges that are 100% funded by it are delayed, hence delaying the release of salaries to employees. The DUTA deplores the criminal negligent attitude of the Delhi Government towards timely release of grants as it has had a detrimental effect on the academic functioning of the institutions and has caused immense hardship to employees in these difficult times of the pandemic.
Despite the grandiose announcements made by the Chief Minister, Shri Arvind Kejriwal about the release of 28 crores towards the grants-in-aid for these colleges, the fact is that insufficient grants is leading to delays in disbursement of salaries and other dues.
The DUTA observed one-Day Strike and held an online protest meeting today which saw the participation of a large number of teachers who spoke about the myriad ways in which the academic environment is being vitiated by the acts of omission and commission of the Delhi Government. While demanding the immediate release of grants, teachers also warned of the consequences if the Government failed to do so whereupon they would be forced to step up the agitation.
Teachers are at the end of their tether as salaries/ pensions have not been paid, payment of other dues of employees including medical bills, arrears of the 7th Pay Commission, etc. have not been done due to inadequacy of grants. Even pensioners, perhaps the most vulnerable section of our society, have not been spared.
The DUTA has been repeatedly pointing out that inordinate and unexplained delays in release of grant have had a crippling effect on these institutions, which are amongst the best colleges of the country. The teachers, students and employees will not tolerate this wilful destruction of these premier institutions.
The DUTA categorically demands that the Government unconditionally releases the grants as the employees must not be penalized but paid all their dues without any further delay. Failure to do so will force the DUTA to escalate the agitation.
